Apple Cider Vinegar is made by fermenting apples and then adding water to the solution, this allows Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV to have 5% acidity. There are different types of ACV like distilled, raw and so on. In fact, unpasteurized ACV is also known as the “mother” ACV, because it is allowed to ferment naturally, with the help of enzymes.

The mother often appears foggy or with substances floating in it, which makes some consumers wonder if the ACV is good for ingestion. The mother is actually a purer form of ACV, and is safe for consumption, in fact, with time the floating pieces settle at the bottom of the bottle. The interesting bit is that ACV has a long shelf life and doesn’t need any refrigeration, although, with time it may change colour.

If you are wondering why apple cider vinegar has suddenly become such a popular topic of discussion, is because Apple Cider Vinegar is considered as a superfood, and people who use ACV believe that it is the answer to all ailments. However, the effectiveness of ACV is still open to further research and debate. One of the uses of ACV, which has made it insanely popular with people is its association with weight loss promotion. Researchers are still divided on their opinion about ACV and weight loss promotion, while some believe that this weight loss is brought about because ACV has no calories, and others believe that like apple fills up the stomach for a long time, ACV displays the same properties.

However, dieticians and researchers have also cautioned users against supplementing ACV for meals. They have suggested that ACV could be a part of a person’s meal, added as salad dressing, or taste enhancer to certain dishes, but it should not replace a square meal.

A research study conducted with rats showed a decided reduction in the triglyceride, LDL, and total cholesterol levels, because ACV contains antioxidants. The Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism1 published a study report which stated that 2 tsp apple cider vinegar mixed with a meal of complex carbohydrates and lower the glycemic index of the carbohydrates involved, by 20%. Another study published by European Journal of Clinical Nutrition2 found that the acetic acid in vinegar improves insulin tolerance if taken before meal.

Diabetes Care published a study report with 11 participants, the report stated that people who took 2 tbsp of ACV and cheese reported lower levels of fasting glucose when compared to people who had cheese with water before bed.

However, diabetes control and weight loss are not the only benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar. Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine published the case of a woman in her early thirties. The woman was suffering from yeast infection in her vagina, which was cured by the application of ACV. This is a unique case, though, researchers are still divided about their opinion on whether ACV is safe for putting in pH sensitive areas of the body, especially the vagina.

Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for Weight Loss

Apple Cider Vinegar has been popular for weight loss, however, one must be careful of the kind of ACV one is using for weight loss. Traditionally made apple cider vinegar can be used safely because the production if done the traditional way, takes about one month. However, factory processes can expedite the process to create vats of apple cider vinegar in a single day. The thing to focus upon is the acetic acid, which is an active component.

Acetic acid is alternatively known as ethanoic acid, it is organic in nature, which gives a strong, golden-peach colour and tastes sour. In fact, acetic acid makes 5%-6% of apple cider vinegar, along with water and other acids like malic acid in trace amounts. Animal studies have indicated that the acetic acid present in ACV may have benefits for the human body, including weight loss, researchers believe, this effect is achieved because of acetic acid is a short-chain fatty acid, which easily dissolves into hydrogen and acetate in the body. Here is how this breaking up of acetic acid helps with weight loss:

Manages Blood Sugar: A rat study found that acetic acid enhanced the blood sugar absorbing properties of muscles and liver. Additionally, acetic acid also played a major role in reducing the glucagon-insulin ratio, which promoted the burning of body fat.

Metabolism Improvement: Another rat study showed that exposing rats to acetic acid leads to an increase in the AMPK enzyme3 in them, which decreases fat by promoting fat burning, and controlling the production of sugar in the liver.

Reduction in Storage of Fat: In another study, obese and diabetic rats were treated with apple cider vinegar, and it was discovered that acetate prevented weight gain, as well as activated genes which helped with reduction of storage of belly fat, as well, as storage of fat on the liver.

Appetite Suppression: Another animal study4 revealed that acetic acid may act on the hunger centres of the brain and suppress appetite from there and result in less hunger and feeling full immediately at eating food.

Fat Burning: Another study consisted of feeding rats with high fat diet first, and then supplementing their diet with apple cider vinegar. The researchers discovered significant activity as well as increase in genes which promote fat burning, and reduction in storage of fat.

While animal tests have proved to be successful, researchers are still divided on the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar on humans, although, one human test study5 did indicate that apple cider vinegar is very effective for weight loss. This study was conducted in Japan and consisted of over 140 obese people, who were divided into 3 groups, and accordingly fed a placebo, 15 ml of apple cider vinegar, and 30 ml of apple cider vinegar. The participants had to continue with their normal diet but avoid liquour.

The study lasted for 3 months, and in these three months, the group drinking 30 ml of apple cider vinegar daily, on an average lost the most weight, at 3.7kgs, however, the group drinking 15ml of apple cider vinegar on an average lost 2.6 kgs. The researchers concluded that apple cider vinegar can reduce total fat, waist size as well as weight.

A follow up study which was conducted for 6 weeks, concluded that high doses of apple cider vinegar can lead to 10% lesser fat gain, as compared to low dosage vinegar consumption which led to only 2% lesser fat gain.

Other Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar has been known to have several health benefits, we have already mentioned a lot of them in a previous blog called Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple Cider Vinegar for Skin & Pimples

Apple Cider Vinegar has several benefits for skin especially when it comes to dealing with acne and pimples. Malic acid present in the mother solution of apple cider vinegar has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties and thus, are excellent natural acne removers. Apple cider vinegar can also balance the pH of skin as well as clear blocked pores. In fact, ACV is rich in alpha-hydroxy acids, which occur naturally in it, and can reach deep into your skin and follicles to clear out bacteria and reduce acne.

People suffering from acne should use an apple cider vinegar skin toner twice a day, leaving it on for 10 minutes each, along with an apple cider vinegar face mask twice a week for best results.

How to make Apple Cider Vinegar Skin Toner:

Take 2 Tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar, and 2 Tbsp water, mix well, now add 5 crushed aspirin tablets to the mix. Aspirin helps peel off dead skin to brighten skin if you have sensitive skin you should avoid the aspiring and just make a simple toner with apple cider vinegar and water.

But this is not the only way in which apple cider vinegar is beneficial for your skin, here are a few more beauty tips which use apple cider vinegar.

Treatment for Sunburns

Apple Cider Vinegar is being used for ages to help treat sunburns. Apple cider vinegar is an astringent and helps soothe pain as well as expedite the healing process, balancing the skin’s pH as well as reducing inflammation and preventing blisters. Here are two sunburn treatment solutions with apple cider vinegar.

Mix 1 bowl of apple cider vinegar in 8 bowls of water and use this mixture to sponge the sunburnt area.

Add 1 cup apple cider vinegar to lukewarm water. Soak for 30 minutes.

These solutions should be used daily till their need subsides.

Antiseptic Behaviour

Mix 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar with water, use a clean cotton to dip in this mixture and apply on the cut, acetic acid is an antiseptic which also soothes burns caused by razors.

Whitening of Teeth

Mix, 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar, with 9 tablespoons of water, and use it as a mouthwash. Apple Cider Vinegar, cleans up teeth stains immediately.

For Treating Smelly Feet and Rough Heels

Add a bowl of apple cider vinegar in a tub, along with 4 bowls of water (keep adding the ingredients in 1:4 ratio till you reach the desired amount of mix in the tub), now soak your feet in the mixture for 15-20 minutes before rinsing and drying your feet. The odor of your feet will be neutralized.

For smooth heels, soak your feet for 30-45 minutes in a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water, mixed at a 50:50 ratio and then remove the stubborn bits with the help of a buff, before rinsing your feet and drying them.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Hair

Apple Cider Vinegar has amazing benefits for your hair too. Here are few things you can create with ACV to enhance the health of your hair. Here are a few tips for your hair:

Anti-Dandruff

Apple cider vinegar is acidic in nature, which makes it an excellent agent for maintaining the scalp’s pH along with preventing the formation of fungi (dandruff) in your scalp.

Mix 250 ml each of apple cider vinegar and water, tea tree oil (not more than 10 drops) can be added to enhance the antimicrobial activity of the mix, but if you don’t have tea tree oil, this can work well independently too. After shampooing your hair, rinse your hair with this mix. You can also use it on days when you only plan to rinse your hair. If you suffer from dandruff based fungi, then mix more vinegar in your mixture.

Cure for Sensitive or Itchy Scalp

Nearly 40% of the population suffers from a sensitive scalp which in turn makes it itchy. Harmful chemicals additionally make it more itchy and may cause some inflammation due to irritation. Especially, medicated shampoos can disbalance the pH levels of the scalp. The anti-dandruff rinse we created above works exceptionally well for curing this problem too. Add a few drops of a soothing essential oil like lavender oil to soothe the itchiness of your scalp more, if you do not have essential oils, this rinse will still work fine.

Hair Growth

Apple Cider Vinegar can remove dead skin, as well as activate the follicles of the hair to help hair grow more. Here are two rinse recipes for you:

Mix equal parts water and apple cider vinegar and rinse your hair daily with this mix, especially after shampooing your hair for removal of dead skin and longer hair.

Boil nettle leaves (100gms), in one litre of water and allow it cool. Add 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar to this mix, and rinse your hair with this mix. Nettle leaves are available online, in their dried form, so you can make a nettle leaf tea, strain just the water and add apple cider vinegar to the same for similar result.

In fact, massaging your scalp with the rinse will help remove dead skin, as well as activate hair follicles to act better.

De-tangled and Smooth Hai

Apple Cider Vinegar as an astringent helps narrow the hair cuticles, making hair smoother. ACV’s astringent properties close the cuticles around your hair. The hair rinse suggested as an anti-dandruff also comes with these benefits. In fact, this rinse can also straighten your hair without damaging your hair, as a hair straightener would with the excessive heat.

Apple Cider Vinegar Nutrition Facts

The amount of interest and fanfare that Apple Cider Vinegar has generated leads one to wonder about its nutrition facts, especially when it is known that apple cider vinegar barely has any carbs or total fats. Here is a brief table describing the nutrition facts of apple cider vinegar.

News:

Constipation is a very common inconvenience faced by pregnant women world over. When it occurs a pregnant woman needs to obtain immediate relief from constipation to avoid abdominal pains and complications such as rectal bleeding or haemorrhoids.

Have your lavatory sessions become nightmares so much so that after conceiving you dread each step you take towards the toilet? Do you feel your digestive system has become slow and in fact, its functioning has gone awry? If any of these statements resonate with you then reading this post just might be your answer!

From nausea, acidity, backache, to insomnia – pregnancy comes with many side-effects that may be difficult to manage, may make you moody, depressed or may also be devastating for you at times.

What is Constipation?

When someone suffers from strenuous bowel movement, i.e., the person has to exert force during defecation, leading to abdominal pain and sometimes even rectal bleeding, it is termed as constipation.
The body waste accumulates inside, causing constant uneasiness to the constipated person and sometimes even triggering irritation in him/her.

Causes of Constipation During Pregnancy:

During pregnancy, an increase in the levels of progesterone hormones occurs that causes the muscles of your body, including the intestinal muscles to relax and slow down. With the slowing down of the muscles, the process of digestion in the pregnant woman’s body too slows down. This results in slow movement of the food through the digestive tract resulting in constipation.

In the later stages of pregnancy, as the embryo grows bigger it puts pressure on the walls of the uterus. As the pressure increases, day by day the passage along the rectum can become constricted preventing the bowels from ejecting body waste smoothly.

Listed below are some of the mains reasons that cause constipation during pregnancy:

Morning sickness and reduced appetite: Morning sickness affects most would-be-mothers and makes it difficult for them to eat or even drink water properly. Morning sickness can lessen appetite and make the expectant mother feel nauseous.

Changes in hormones: A surge in the growth of progesterone hormones results in the sluggish behaviour of the digestive process.

Changes in diet: Pregnant women need to change their diet for the proper development of their growing fetus. A sudden change in diet can cause constipation. Added to that if the expectant mother takes a diet low in fiber, that too can cause constipation.

Vitamin and iron supplements: Pregnant women also often take vitamins and iron supplements that are known to cause sluggishness in the digestive system and cause constipation.

Minimal Physical Exercise: Lack of exercise can be another cause of constipation during pregnancy.

Anxiety and Mood Swings: Bowel movement also tends to get affected by a person’s mood. During pregnancy, a woman’s moods may be unpredictable. She may be anxious and also tend to worry a lot which can affect her digestion process and thus, her bowel movements.

Symptoms of Constipation During Pregnancy:

During pregnancy, the most common symptoms of constipation are:

A decrease in appetite

Reduced bowel movements

Blood in the stool due to hard faeces

Abdominal bloating and pain

Side-effects of Constipation During Pregnancy:

Here are few of the side-effects that may occur when you are pregnant and constipated:

Repetitive extreme rectal bleeding

Haemorrhoids or piles

Severe pain in the abdomen

Pain during bowel movements

Pain or discomfort after bowel movements

Preventing Constipation During Pregnancy:

Though constipation during pregnancy can be a major cause of discomfort, it can be easily remedied by a simple diet and lifestyle changes and a few easy home-remedies. While some home remedies offer immediate constipation relief during pregnancy, others help you get better gradually.

Lemon – In a glass of warm water squeeze, half a slice of lemon juice and also add half a spoon of honey. Stir the mix well and drink. Lemon has antioxidants in it and is rich in vitamin C which helps to increase the bile production in the body that ultimately regulates the contractions of the digestive tracts enabling the stool to pass out smoothly.

Oranges- Eating two oranges daily during pregnancy reduces constipation greatly. Along with being the source of vitamin C, oranges are rich in fibre that forces the body to expel waste smoothly.

Flaxseeds –Take one and a half tablespoon of flaxseeds every day. Chew the seeds properly and gulp. Flaxseeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that help to retain the fluids in the body. They have mucilage in them which forms a layer of protection around the digestive tract. Flaxseeds increase the stool mass making it soft and enabling it to be ejected from the body without exerting force.

Eating fruits – If not otherwise restricted by the doctor, any fruits that soften the stool like, banana, avocado, kiwi should be consumed daily during pregnancy to avoid constipation. In fact, fibrous fruits should be made a compulsory part of the diet during this period as that can ensure smooth bowel movements.

Healthy Practices to Avoid Constipation During Pregnancy:

Here are a few steps you can take to avoid constipation altogether during your pregnancy:

To get the food digested and have a proper bowel movement taking a brisk walk every day often helps.

You can do a few freehand exercises daily that are suggested by the doctor during your pregnancy to keep the muscles of your body in action which will help bring in the pressure to release the stool from your body without stress and effort.

If, and only if the doctor suggests some medicines to alleviate constipation, then you can consider taking the medicines according to the dosage advised by your doctor. Else, ask your doctor for safe natural alternatives to relieve you of the discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Constipation During Pregnancy

Will the consumption of antibiotics during pregnancy harm your baby or are you advised to take it during pregnancy? What would be the risks involved? Antibiotics have been used over a thousands of years to treat infections affecting the human body.

It was only until the last century that people got to know that most infections were caused by bacteria. Early civilizations used plant extracts to treat infections. The growth in medical science has enabled a straight way of treating infections such as pneumonia and diarrhea.

What are Antibiotics?

Antibiotics are powerful drugs that fight certain types of infections when used properly. In simple, terms, they either curtail bacteria from spreading or destroy them completely. In cases when the immune system cannot fight excessive bacteria, antibiotics comes in handy.

Improper Use of Antibiotics:

If people abuse antibiotics or tend to use them incorrectly, there are high risks that the bacteria in your body may become resistant to it. This means that the bacteria would not respond to any antibiotic you consume in the long run. Sometimes, antibiotics are prescribed to prevent any infection rather than treating it, mostly before a surgery.

Antibiotics Side Effects:

Most side effects of antibiotics affect the digestive system. Some of the side effects include:

Loss of appetite

Nausea

Vomiting

Abdominal pain

White patches on tongue

Allergic reactions such as swelling of lips, face or tongue and short breath

Note: The most common side effects of antibiotics affect the digestive system.

Antibiotics that can be Taken During Pregnancy:

[table id=58 /]

Note: There are certain antibiotics that pose potential risks during pregnancy. One such harmful antibiotic is tetracycline’s. This drug is can discolor a developing baby’s teeth. Tetracycline’s is not recommended after the mother has completed her 15th week of pregnancy.

Antibiotics that are Not Safe During Pregnancy:

According to a recent study by Canadian Medical Association Journal, antibiotics such as macrolides, quinolones, tetracyclines, sulfonamides and metronidazole led to high risk in miscarriage.

[table id=59 /]

Study Proves Antibiotics Are Risk To Fetus:

Antibiotics may be required for a particular health problem even during pregnancy. The risk differs from antibiotic to antibiotic. But in most cases people who take antibiotics are subjected to a lot of complications. Some of the rare side effects of antibiotics during pregnancy include:

Jaundice

Damage to the fetal joint development

Discoloration of fetal teeth.

The risks will differ according to the type of antibiotic taken during pregnancy. The consumption of antibiotics during pregnancy increases the risks of jaundice, discoloration of fetal teeth and also damages the fetal cartilage.

According to Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and Aarhus University, researchers believe that antibiotic medication can harm the fetus and disturb the mothers microbiome. The study also stated that women who took antibiotics during pregnancy have children who have 20 percent higher risk of being hospitalised with infections.

The above results were based on a sample size of 7,00,000 children taken into the study. The study found that, Vaginally born babies are safe from infections, while cesarean born babies get a microbiome (protection against germs) from the hospital environment.

Common Causes of Infections During Pregnancy:

Infections during pregnancy is a common problem and thus it must be treated in an appropriate manner. Unnecessary Consumption of antibiotics can have a major impact on the future generation. Generally birth effects associated with the intake of antibiotics include:

1) Anencephaly:

Anencephaly is a deficiency that happens during the fetus formation. Once the baby is born, it may not have a skull over the back of the head. In some cases, babies may not a skull around the front and sides of the head. Anencephaly is considered as a fatal malfunction of the skull and the brain. It is a condition that is occurs at birth that affects the formation of the brain and the skull bone. This results in minimal development of the brain for the fetus. The infant suffering from this deficiency can survive for few hours, days or even weeks.

2) Choanal Atresia:

It is a deficiency that happens due to consumption of antibiotics during pregnancy wherein the fetuses nasal airway get blocked in the process of formation. It is a condition that happens by birth. This condition is more common among female infants. This is mostly diagnosed shortly after birth.

3) Congenital Limb Defects/Abnormalities:

This type of defect usually occurs when the upper part or lower part of your limb fails to form normally during fetus formation. This usually happens when the baby is developing in the uterus. This could possibly be the worst nightmare for a parent with a huge expectation for a healthy child.

4) Diaphragmatic Hernia:

This usually occurs when the abdominal organs move upwards into your chest region through a small opening in the diaphragm. This is again found after the baby is born or sometimes later in life.

5) Congenital Heart Defects:

Congenital heart disease happens as a result of an early developmental problem in the heart’s structure. The defect interferes with the normal flow of blood through the heart, which may affect breathing.

6) Cleft Palate:

A cleft palate is a facial disorder and an oral malfunction that occurs very early during pregnancy. Clefting usually happens when there is not enough tissue in the mouth or lip area and the tissue does not join together. In simple terms, a cleft is a separation in the upper lip that and appears as if there is a gap on the upper lip.

An antibiotic may be prescribed to prevent infection spreading to various parts of your body. In certain cases pregnant woman are given antibiotics depending on the infection prevalent in the body.

In this case, you need to consult your doctor to know if you can continue taking antibiotics without damaging the fetus. Moreover, just because these fetal attacks happened in the past, it doesn’t mean that it will happen again.

While exercising may be the last thing you feel like doing when you’re pregnant, it’s important to stay active as regular exercise has a range of health benefits for both you and your baby. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) encourages pregnant women to do between 150 and 300 minutes of moderate intensity physical exercise each week. This includes a combination of aerobic and strength conditioning exercise.

Before you start any new exercise program, it’s best to check with your Healthcare professional to assess any medical risks.

Benefits of exercise during pregnancy

There are many benefits to exercising when you’re pregnant. These can include:

increase in fitness and energy levels

stress relief

faster recovery from labour

better sleep and insomnia management

decrease in back and pelvic pain

decrease in the risk of developing anxiety or depression

decrease in delivery complications

Regular exercise can also help to reduce the risk of developing the following pregnancy complications:

pregnancy-induced hypertension

pre-eclampsia

How much exercise is enough?

When you’re pregnant, you should try to keep active every day. RANZCOG encourages pregnant women to do 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity physical exercise each week. They also caution against exercising for more than 60 minutes at a time unless the intensity is relatively light. If you’ve previously been inactive or if you’re overweight, it’s important to limit your exercise duration to 15 to 20 minutes at the start of exercising and build up to 30 minutes sessions over time.

What exercises should you be doing?

It’s important to do a combination of both aerobic and strength training exercises when you’re pregnant.

Aerobic exercises

Aerobic exercise or “cardio” means “with oxygen”. It’s continuous exercise that causes your breathing and heart rate to increase and keeps your heart, lungs and circulatory system healthy.

The following aerobic exercises are generally safe to do during pregnancy:

walking (aim for a brisk pace)

swimming

jogging (if you’re already jogging regularly)

stationary cycling

Strengthening exercises

Strengthening or anaerobic exercise involves short burst of energy and is usually higher in intensity. Anaerobic exercise is any activity that breaks down glucose for energy without using oxygen. A lot of energy releases in a small period of time, and your oxygen demand is greater than your oxygen supply.

RANZCOG recommends pregnant women perform strengthening exercises twice a week on non-consecutive days. These exercises should cover the main muscle groups in the body. Examples of strengthening exercises include using light weights, body weight or elasticised resistance-bands. When you’re pregnant, it’s important to avoid lifting with heavy weights, walking lunges, or straining your body.

You should aim for one to two sets of 12 to 15 repetitions for each strengthening exercise. These strength training exercises should be at a moderate intensity with slow, steady movements and correct breathing technique.

Exercises to avoid

You should avoid strenuous exercise during hot or humid weather and you should also avoid exercises that involve lying flat on your back after the first trimester of pregnancy.

It’s important not to perform activities that include a risk of falling over or getting hit. These can include:

contact sports such as kickboxing, judo, squash and rugby

horseriding, skiing, or gymnastics

RANZCOG also recommend that you avoid heavy weight lighting or other activities that involve straining.

When to stop exercising

If you start feeling any of the following symptoms, it’s important to stop exercising straight away and see your doctor:

headache

dizziness or feeling faint

chest pain or heart palpitations

unusual shortness of breath

·vaginal bleeding

excessive fatigue

muscle weakness

Where to get more information

Health professionals

You can speak with your doctor, midwife or physiotherapist for more information about exercising during pregnancy.

Phonelines

Drinking fruit juice may seem like a healthy option but drinking a lot of juice can be bad for our health. Fruit juice does have some health benefits including containing vitamins, minerals and plant compounds that can protect you from disease. However, fruit juice is also a concentrated source of natural sugar. One small glass of juice (250ml) is equal to four pieces of fruit.

If you drink high quantities of fruit juice, you could be contributing to excess energy intake increasing your risk of obesity and other conditions like type 2 diabetes. Despite what the label on the juice bottle might say, or even if the juice is “freshly squeezed”, you can’t beat plain old water and tucking into a fresh apple or orange.

What’s wrong with fruit juice?

High in sugar and increases the risk of weight gain

One of the main problems with fruit juice is that it’s high in calories and sugar and low in fibre and very easy to drink. If you’re drinking it regularly, it can lead to weight gain by adding unnecessary energy to your day. The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting fruit juice consumption to 125ml (as a single serve) and should only contribute to 1 of your 2 fruit serves recommended every day.

Drinking a lot of sugary drinks has been linked to a number of lifestyle conditions.

Damaging to your teeth

As fruit juice is high in sugar, it can provide a food for the bacteria in dental plaque, resulting in an increase in dental decay. The other issue is that the acid content of many fruit juices can start to damage the enamel on your teeth and this can lead to a higher risk of tooth decay.

What do the Australian eating guidelines say?

According to the Guidelines for Healthy Eating, we should only occasionally drink a small amount of fruit juice with no added sugar. They caution that fruit juice is acidic and can increase the risk of dental erosion.

The guidelines also recommend we should be consuming two serves of fruit a day.

A standard serve of fruit is about 150g or:

1 medium apple, banana, orange or pear

2 small apricots, kiwi fruits or plums

1 cup of diced or canned fruit (with no added sugar)

What should we have instead of fruit juice?

Water

If you’re looking to quench your thirst, water is always the healthiest option. It’s also free and readily available in Australia and causes no damage to your teeth. In fact, the fluoride that’s added to tap water helps to protect your teeth from decay.

Whole fruit

If you’re looking for a bit more energy, whole fruit is a much healthier option than fruit juice. Whole fruit contains more fibre and is therefore more filling and leaves you less likely to overeat. For example, it’s much easier to drink the juice of seven apples than it is to eat seven apples in one sitting.

Ice tea

Homemade iced tea (not bottled iced tea which is high in sugar) is refreshing and can be made by brewing four teaspoons of loose-leaf herbal tea with one litre of freshly boiled water. You can add a few mint leaves, store in the fridge until chilled, and enjoy with a slice of lemon. There are also cold infusion tea-bags available with lots of flavours and no added sugars.

Fruit infused water

Fruit infused water is simply water with fruits such as strawberries, lemon, orange and watermelon added. Add a little mint for a special touch.

What about coconut water?

Coconut water is the water of a young, green coconut and because of the hydrating qualities and the electrolytes it contains, it’s been marketed as a low sugar alternative to water. The reality is that it’s only low in sugar when you compare it to fruit juice or soda drinks. Coconut water is often high in natural sugars. Many of the marketed forms of the drink also contain added sugar as well. While it is high in potassium, it only has small amounts of other electrolytes like calcium, phosphorus and sodium. It also isn’t very high in vitamins. Overall, drinking coconut water is ok nutritionally, but it’s better just to stick to plain old water.

Ways to encourage children to eat fruit

Eat the rainbow

It’s important to try to eat a wide variety of vegetables and fruit each day as they all contain different nutrients. Focusing on colour can be a good way to engage your kids.

Fruit blooms

Take some watermelon and rock melon slices and, using a cookie cutter, create some beautiful flower fruit shapes. Add a popsicle stick for the stem, and watch your children giggle and gobble them down!

Heart apples

Show your child some love in their lunchbox by adding a heart to their apple. Simply take a red and a green apple, cut them in half and remove the core from each side. Cut a heart shape out from a half of each colour using a cookie cutter, and then switch the pieces over.

Fruit pizza

Start with a slice of watermelon and ask your toddler to pick some fruit toppings like passionfruit and blueberries.

You can find more ideas for getting your kids to eat fruit and vegetables at the Queensland Department of Health.

Many people suffer from back pain, and back pain has a huge list of possible causes. But one item on that list that many people don’t think of is the other half of their trunk: the belly.

Our bellies are there to do a lot more than just look good in a bathing suit (although that is a great part of it). Our bellies also support our cores, and as a result, they balance out our backs. When I was a kickboxer many moons ago, I remember my trainer used to tell me how important it was to work out my back in order to support my belly. He warned me about doing too many crunches without working on the other side, realizing that if I didn’t do a well-rounded job with my workouts I might get thrown off and actually end up injured. He was right- and it turns out it works the other way around too.

So many of us fail to hold our posture, and we work out erratically, forgetting to exercise the “other” muscles that we have. But one key time when this problem really rears its head is after baby-making. Bellies can take a lot of stress, but baby making is as real as it gets. For most moms, by the time you finish, the strength and structure of the abdominal wall is all but lost.

With the muscles off alignment and the tissues all stretched out, even the best of workout efforts are likely to fail. Furthermore, pushing even harder without the right balance can cause an even more extreme stress on your core- and more pain. Rebuilding your belly, whether surgically or non, can sometimes be a huge help in finding that balance and sometimes even in relieving that pain. For some patients, a weak belly can even mean trouble going to the bathroom, since pushing down to get stuff out is another important role that the beautiful belly is supposed to play. Misery.

Your belly wall is actually a bigger part of your overall health than it’s made out to be. Ripped abs are sweet, but they are more than just eye candy. A strong and balanced core helps you stand up straight, feel alright, and work that middle the way it’s supposed to. Getting a proper assessment can help you figure out what is causing all of that drama- and that’s the first step to getting better.

Every once in a while, as you gaze at one of your favorite celebrities who just really hit the big-time, you start to wonder…. what in the world did she do to herself? She still looks sort of like herself, but somehow things just seem off. Even stranger, you know she is young, and she seems a little less wrinkled, but she also oddly looks a lot more like an older woman than she did a few months ago. How does that happen?

In the wake of an injectables revolution, one must consider the old adage- all things in moderation. Fillers and toxins are fantastic aesthestic tools, and when used properly, can yield tremendous results. But if things get out of hand, they can really backfire.

For one, some lines are meant to be on your face, and completely removing them makes things look a little strange. For example, nasolabial folds (aka, laugh lines) should be soft and not make you look like a wooden puppet, but if you really flatten that entire upper lip area, you start to look like a doll and not a human. What’s more, complete flattening makes the lip look longer, and that looks more masculine. And anything masculine on a woman will start to look old.

There are several areas of the face that have this same limitation when overly smoothed, but this is not the only potential pitfall with injections. At this point, so many people are so overdone that the overdone look has its own stigma. You can spot the look from across a room, and it has the connotation of an older person trying to look young beyond what is possible. The interesting thing about this is that, when a young person starts to look done, she will start to look like the older woman trying to look young, and will then start to look OLD! The more tells there are, the worse this gets, until eventually you just can’t tell who is who anymore.

The good thing about most of these methods is that they do wear off, so if you go too far there is usually room for reprisal. But if enough needles have been enough places, scar tissue will form, and this is a one way situation. Patients may not realize that no cut does not mean no scar- it only means tiny needle shaped ones. A couple of them twice a year won’t do much in the long run, but if you’ve used five syringes in your cheeks every quarter for ten years, there is in fact no turning back. And at that point, sometimes surgery is the better answer after all.

In treating patients with fillers and Botox, I always consider what the natural younger version of them should look like. The intention is to slow time and preserve identity, all the while without letting anyone know that you are doing anything. Beauty extremes seldom succeed, and there is also just so much your skin can handle without fighting back. Be aware that this type of fight generally isn’t pretty.

Breast implants are done mainly for two reasons:

Purely cosmetic reasons

As a corrective surgery, after resection with breast cancer

There are two common types of implants used – silicone saline implants and silicone gel implants.

In the first one, empty silicone implants are put into place and then injected with a saline solution.

In the second, pre filled silicone cups with saline gels are put in place to serve as implants.

Breast implants were introduced in the 1960s and were widely used in the 1980s. However, a number of complications were also identified and the demand for implants began to decrease. Listed below are some risks and precautions one could take to avoid these risks.

Surgical complications: As with any surgery, there is a wide range of possible complications ranging from anesthesia, bleeding, delayed or failure to heal, infection, scar formation, etc. The nerve supply could be affected during the surgery, which might affect the sensation in the nipple area. The precaution to take here would be to ensure you are in safe hands. Only sign up with a surgeon who someone you know can validate and vouch for.

Infection: Not just as a surgical complication, but the infection can occur later too. The implants are artificial substances implanted and so have the potential to cause infection along the incisions. As a precaution, strictly follow the prescribed post-operative instructions which would include a course of antibiotics. Any changes in the surgical site should be reported immediately to the medical team.

Implant rejection: The implant is a foreign substance at the end of the day and can be rejected by the body. This can induce an allergic reaction and require removal of the implant. As a precaution, doctors would test your body’s compatibility with the implant material before actually going ahead with the implant.

Ruptures: Whatever the type of implants, they can rupture with the fluid draining out and the shape is lost. Implants with saline water filled in do not require repeat surgery, as the saline water will get absorbed into the body. Those with silicone gel require repeat surgery to remove the gel from the body. Ruptures can cause deflation of the breasts, leading to a bigger or worse esthetic problem than the original condition. Discuss this risk ahead of the procedure with your doctor.

Contracture: Once the implant is positioned and the incision closed, the skin will contract to close up, and this can lead to tightening of the skin and scar formation around the implant. Putting yourself in safe hands reduces this risk.

Cancer: Though not strongly established, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did identify a possible relationship between breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Therefore, go over this with your doctor before signing up.

Breast implants may sound attractive but have their own risks. The doctor would explain in detail and get your consent to proceed. Make sure you take adequate precautions before going ahead with the implant.

The joy of watching your tiny bundle of happiness that has arrived and is squeaking its heart aloud is very special. It is of utmost importance that after the baby is born, both parents work together and plan for the baby’s warm surroundings, vaccinations and immunization schedule, the height-weight checkup, etc. To celebrate parenthood and learn more tips on how to care for a newborn, Newborn Care Week is celebrated every year from 15 November to 21 November.

Why Neonatal Care is Important?

The neonatal period is the first 28 days of the newborn baby. Separated from the mother’s womb, the child must adjust itself to the surroundings. Statistically, it has been observed that within the first 28 days, newborn deaths have been the highest. The reasons stated for this unfortunate situation by pediatricians all over the world are:

Malnutrition

Premature birth

Delivery complexities like asphyxia

Infections

Congenital issues etc.

When a baby is delivered, it must breathe normally, feed on its mother and stay warm. The care-giving environment must also be free of infection. Incubators should be on service based on demand. If these basic amenities are available, the child can survive.

Nation-wide Awareness

In order to prevent neonatal deaths, the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Government of India has created plenty of mother and child care programs over the years. The most prominent ones among those are:

Child Survival and Safe Motherhood program (1992)

Reproductive and Child Health Program- phase 1 and phase 2

National Rural Health Mission (2005)

Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Framework (2013)

The aim of these programs is to create a safe environment for delivery, antenatal and postnatal care through experts, rehabilitation of sick newborns, continuous growth and development monitoring, etc. The latest addition to this welfare scheme is the Mother’s Absolute Affection program through which infant mortality rates are aimed to be brought down even further.

Aim of Newborn Week

Newborn Care Week is observed with the following aim:

Expecting mothers and their guardians are taught about the importance of sanitization.

The doctor’s nurses and other caregivers also give a presentation on how to keep the child warm and safe from pollution.

The importance of immunization is highlighted and parents are kept abreast of the latest care programs announced by the government.

Few pointers on childcare include:

Newborns must be breastfed for at least 6 months.
